File Explorer shows no volume, and Disk Management labels that space raw or unallocated and offers to initialise it. Not on its own. Its layout is proprietary rather than NTFS or FAT, so Windows finds no filesystem and reports raw or unallocated space. The hardware is readable and the video is present. What is missing is a DVR data extractor that understands the structure the unit wrote.
Because Disk Management finds no filesystem it recognises and assumes the disk is new. Do not accept. A format writes a new volume across those platters and channel mapping goes with it. Cancel it. The disk then opens normally in Source and Detect.
No. The extractor reads the disk on its own, connected to a computer through a dock or an internal port. Where a unit is still powered and reachable, DVR video acquisition pulls footage across the network instead. A unit that will not power up, that was damaged or that was thrown out years ago makes no difference, because video lives on platters rather than inside your DVR.

A DVR extractor tool has to recognise the layout before it reads anything. Hikvision units write WFS and Dahua units write DHFS, and coverage above names a wider family. Some NVRs recording IP camera streams use no proprietary layout at all. Yes. A surveillance system fills its disk and then overwrites oldest material, so security camera retention is limited by disk size and channel count. Once material has gone, DVR data recovery is the tool that looks for it. On a small unit recording every camera continuously that is often two to four weeks, and less at higher resolution. Overwriting continues while a DVR runs, so pull any disk holding footage you need.
Admissibility is a matter for the court and the rules differ by jurisdiction. DVR Video Extractor Tool supports chain of custody.
