Acronis changed format at True Image 2020. The tool handles the old container and the new one from the same window, with no setting to pick.
Nothing from Acronis has to be present on the machine doing the reading. No rescue media, no install and no licence check.
Seagate, WD, Intel and Crucial all ship cut down True Image builds. Their backups use the same container, so they load the same way.
The source file is opened for reading only. A demo run costs the backup nothing, whatever it holds.

Use Open File and point it at a single .tib or .tibx image. If the backup is a full plus incremental set, use Open Folder and point it at the directory holding them all.
The tool identifies the file by its binary signature, the bytes CE 24 B9 A2 or B4 6E 68 44 at the head of an Acronis image, so a renamed backup still opens. File Details names it as an Acronis image and shows which product version wrote it, before you commit to anything.
Partition tables come first, whether MBR or GPT, then the filesystem on each partition, so you get a folder tree rather than a single opaque blob. Every NTFS, FAT and ext volume inside the image opens as a folder tree.
Search by file name or walk the tree, then tick a whole partition, one folder or a single document. Retrieving one spreadsheet does not mean restoring a 400 GB disk image, because the tool reads inside it.
Files are written out with their original directory structure and both timestamps, the created date and the modified date. The tool opens the source .tib read only and never writes to it.
Only as much as the files you tick, not the size of the whole image. That is the practical difference between extraction and a full restore. It matters most when the backup is bigger than the disk you have free.

The original format
A sector by sector image of a hard disk written by Acronis True Image. Inside it sits a partition table and one or more filesystems. Inside those sit your documents. Nothing in Windows knows how to unwrap that outer layer.
Acronis 2020 and later
Acronis writes larger backups to this container from the 2020 release onward. A TIBX merges each adjacent incremental into its base file, so one .tibx often holds several backup versions where a TIB set would need several files. It is read here the same way.
One backup, numbered files
A single backup can also be split by size into numbered files such as 1.tib and 2.tib, which was common when people burned backups to discs. That is one backup in pieces rather than a chain of versions. Load the folder and the tool joins the pieces back up.
Yes. The Acronis forums have said otherwise for a decade, that only True Image can open a .tib.
It is half right. TIB is a closed format, so no general purpose tool opens one. Closed is not the same as encrypted, which is why the format opens without Acronis. The layout can be read, so the disk image inside then behaves like any other.

Six routes open one of these images, although four of them come from Acronis. Each route depends on something you may no longer have, so the right one varies.
When Acronis is still installed and licensed on the machine, start there. Right-click the image in Windows Explorer, choose Mount and copy your files off the drive letter it creates. Everything below this line covers the case where that route has closed.

Every Acronis route above is legitimate and costs nothing if the software is still there. When the software is there, mounting is the quickest of them. A TIB file extractor is for the case the other four assume away, where the licence, the install and the rescue disc have all gone.

Acronis rarely writes a single TIB backup, so one .tib file is often not the whole set. It writes a chain of full, incremental and differential versions. The later links do not stand on their own, although each one looks complete.

If the folder holds one .tib and nothing else, you have a standalone full backup and there is nothing to worry about. Chains are common on scheduled backups, which is where most Seagate and bundled setups end up.

Seagate licensed Acronis True Image for the backup software bundled with its external drives. Acronis also sold the retail product as Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office between 2021 and 2024, so a backup written in those years may name that product instead.
A folder of .tib files with no obvious source traces back to one of those bundles. The drive was replaced, although the licence did not transfer with it.
Acronis licensed the engine to four hardware makers, so these OEM builds may never have carried the Acronis name:

All four write the same .tib and .tibx containers as the retail product. All four stop running once the matching brand of drive is gone.
The backup itself is fine. What is missing is something that can read the format.
Questions that come up once the backup will not open
No. TIB is a closed format but it is not encrypted by default, so its layout can be read without the vendor tool. A dedicated TIB extractor opens the file, detects the partitions inside it and reads the filesystems on them, which is what turns the image into a browsable folder tree. Acronis itself does not need to be installed or licensed.
TIB is the original Acronis image format. From the 2020 release, larger backups are written as TIBX instead, which is a newer container built for bigger sets and faster incremental writes. The practical difference is chain layout. TIB writes every version as its own file, so a full backup plus its incrementals is a set of files. TIBX merges adjacent incrementals into the base file, so a single .tibx can hold several versions on its own. Both hold a disk image and both are read here, so one TIB and TIBX extractor covers the pair.
The backup almost certainly came from software that shipped free with a drive. Acronis licensed its engine to Seagate, Western Digital, Intel and Crucial. Each of those builds runs only while that brand of drive is attached. Replace the drive and the software stops, leaving a folder of .tib files created by something you never chose.
Keep the set together. Acronis commonly writes a full backup followed by a run of incrementals. A later file can depend on earlier ones. Load the whole directory with Open Folder rather than picking one file out of the middle of a chain.
Yes. Seagate DiscWizard, Acronis True Image WD Edition, Intel Data Migration Software and Acronis True Image for Crucial are all licensed builds of the same engine and they write the same .tib and .tibx containers. A backup from any of them opens here exactly like a retail Acronis backup, which matters because those OEM builds refuse to run once the matching brand of drive is no longer attached.
A protected backup is flagged as protected when it loads, but the contents stay locked. If you still have the password, remove the protection with the Acronis product first and then open the result here. Backup Extractor is a reader, not a password recovery tool.
The TIB extractor opens the backup, runs the same validation pass the paid build uses and lists every file and folder inside it. Writing the files out is the part that needs a licence. That is enough to prove your own file is readable before you spend anything, which is the sensible order to do this in.
